The Friends of the Sellars Farm State Archaeological Area is a nonprofit volunteer group, organized to assist and encourage the development of one of the best preserved mound/village site of the Middle Cumberland Mississippian Period Culture near Lebanon, Wilson County, TN.  Membership in the Friends of the Sellars Farm State Archaeological Area is open to any who contributes time, skills  and/or resources to the Friends mission.

Established in 1999, the Friends have cleared growth and debris from strategic areas of the site, mowed the State owned area, conducted site tours, given numerous educational programs, helped with the Phase One Project, the U. S. Postal Service unveiling of the Sandy stamp, the Stone Statues Exhibit, and numerous other projects. Public tours are available and have included tours for the annual Tennessee Archaeological Awareness Month, School Groups, Scout Troops, The Nashville Grotto, The Sierra Club and Tennessee Trails, just to name a few.  Thousands of  volunteer hours have been donated toward the mission of the Friends. To increase awareness of the Sellars Farm Archaeological Area the Founder's of the Friends are also giving presentations at local clubs and schools.

Working with area's State legislators, state, local and county officials, the Division of Archaeology, Wilson County Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce, progress is continuing, but much remains to be accomplished.

The Mission of the Friends of the Sellars Farm State Archaeological Area includes:

  • Aid in the protection, promotion and programing of the site.
  • Educate the public about the Middle Cumberland Mississippian Period Culture and the Native Americans who once lived at Sellars Farm.
  • Encourage and assist the State in the scientific archaeological study of the site.
  • Promote the repatriation and reinterment of skeletal remains exhumed from the site in the past.
